it is dificult to control the children without possitive fear ( magic stick) as popullar dialoge says that

"spare the rod  spoil the child "  how ever it is possilble in some manner without stick class can be handle by the

influenced teacher and it is difficult to handle by normar teacher .

Teachers need to model the behaviour they expect. For example, if they would like students to be polite, they can start by saying 'please' 'thank you' and 'sorry' to the students as required.

True, we can only expect students to have sensitivity and respect for others if we have sensitivity and respect for them. How does one deal with insensitive students without punishing? Surely, humiliating students by punishing cannot be the only way out?

Punishment in school can be avoided in schools provided the teachers are willing to avoid that. In that case they need to be more innovative in terms of ideas of teaching in the class and they also have to self reflect frequently to analyse their behaviour and control the same on regular basis.

It is important to create an environment where children see things in 'practice' by one and all in the school.

Yes, we can do away with punishments, I think long term change become deeply entrenched if done with empathy and care.

It is important to do away with punishments, but in a govt. school or any school with say 40 students in a classroom, how does the teacher handle all of them.... Would dialogues work... or our teachers are equipped to handle children without hitting them.

It is very Important to avoid the punishment in class room practice.

If the child sees no disconnect between the responses of the teacher in an non-teaching space also, then the child is more open for dialogue. I am saying particularly to an age group which 'finds' all adults as somebody who trample on their freedom. Rather than punishment (in any form) dialogue is possible as a way out when we respect their need to voice their opinions.

Inculcating a sense of self discipline in a (INNOCENT) child can be through a positive reinforcement and just as Rajini said, dialogue is important......but not PUNISHMENT.

I feel we should be able to engage students in a more better way, also we need to find out "what is interesting to students".

Imparting the right values in the students in the need of the hour. Teachers should take out time in doing this in the classroom apart from imparting knowledge related to their respective subjects. Setting ourselves as an example is the ideal way of inculcating a sense of self-discipline in students. Further encouraging students to read biographies of people who have been successful by exhibiting sheer self-discipline in their lives would help. Punishment in any form is only a negative reinforcement for the student. Proper counselling on the teachers' end can do wonders for the student to turn a new leaf , but it requires the right spirit and oodles of patience on the part of the teacher, which is not impossible.

I have not read all the comments, but I can suggest to make groups of students who are good in academics with the ones who are creating problems. 2. Counseling in order to understand why students are behaving in such a manner. 3. talk to parents to find out how much attention they are giving. 4. send the student to self control his/her emotions, also find out if it is their hormones or or xxxually disturbed.

I agree that teachers should be role models for the behaviour expected from students. It is very important to find out the underlying cause when a student fails to conform to expected behaviour. Meeting the child outside class and listening to what he /she has to say is important ... so also speaking to the child`s parents... to find out the situation at home is crucial . Punishments should be such that the child misses a games/art /theatre/music./swimming.. class that he enjoys the most in school and the child be asked to complete work he has not done during that hour...or it could be that he stays back in school after school hours and complete his work.... A teacher needs to know her students and constantly interact with them ....praise them when she notices good behaviour and counsel them when a certain behaviour of theirs is unacceptable.

Teachers apart from traditional teaching they have to implement new teaching methods were in children s have to be involved were the class should be of more interactive . .Teachers should also act as a mentor were ever presence required .if any of the student is not following the discipline then instead of scolding/abusing allot more authority make him more responsible with proper guidance
