Questions question our understanding of concepts, situations and ideas. There is no question about this. This is an account of the way one teacher, Kinzom Khampa, used the tool of enquiry to get children find the answers.

I have been working as a teacher in the Azim Premji School in Dineshpur (Uttarakhand) since 2012 and talk about behaviour in the class on a regular basis. As of now I am the Class Teacher of Class-4. Five children in the class abuse the others and indulge in misbehavior of a similar kind, especially in the absence of the teacher and this leads to even physical fights because of which there are problems in the conduct of the class and disturbance in the class-room teaching. A lot of time is spent sometimes in resolving these issues.

Unfortunately, keeping your children safe at home is a very difficult task. In the course of a normal day, children, regardless of the age, are exposed to a number of potential dangers. These dangers could result in cuts, bruises and scrapes to more serious medical problems such as broken bones, allergic reaction and head injuries.

While studying Social Sciences, students should be able to understand contemporary social issues as well as their experiences in the classroom and be able to link it all up with the subject. There is not just one way of evaluation. What is important to see is to what depth children have understood the topic and if they have been able to see its linkages to their daily life. If they are able to articulate their views in writing, related as they are to their experience, this would be fulfilling the objectives of education.

If real learning has to happen in children in the classroom, a good preparation on the part of the teacher is a must. We teachers need to know what kind of preparation is necessary. It’s always better to think ‘How does the child learn?’, rather than thinking ‘How to teach the child?’, because the child learns only when he is ready to learn by himself. There is no end to learning, education is a continuous process. While learning in school is one stage, adopting the same in life is another stage.

On face of it, they indeed are EVS activities. When you scratch the surface, you will notice so many other interesting themes (like, surveying, map making, presenting data, creating workable models and prototyping) that come handy in other subjects, emerge on the sidelines of the content explored. Try them out.

 

This is an introductory manual for the teachers which explores the necessity and possibility of integrating the nature of science while teaching any concept of the science. For the convenience the concept of nature of science is discussed with the help of the concepts of light. The resource is for the teachers of upper primary and high school who are teaching science. It can be used by both prospective teachers and the regular teachers dealing with science.

Satya started his professional life as a teacher at an age of 22 immediately after he completed his graduation. Today almost after more than 19 years when he looks back, a realization of how things unfolded gradually comes before his eyes helping him connect the dots. A careful analysis of how he has evolved as a teacher during this ardent journey is outlined below.

 

‘Mathematics Mela’ was an alien and unimaginable word to me before this was held in our school. Generally schools arrange science exhibition or science mela where children display things that take place in day to day life and are also connected with principles of science. These exhibits, or events, are presented from the point of view of science and children participate in it with a lot of enthusiasm. This was my only experience about melas.
