Inclusive schooling

Abstract

 
Mainstream schooling systems, or state education as it can also be referred to, work on the basis of education of a community of children. The public nature of this system, means that children of different backgrounds, religions and classes mingle and mix naturally, learning to work and learn together in an environment that will prove stable for future years, through employment and life in general.

Written by Sujatha Padmanabhan and illustrated by Madhuvanti Anantharajan, this book looks at inclusive schooling and children with special needs, and is inspired by true instances in villages of Ladakh.

Sympathy is the first emotion that strikes us when we see a disabled child. But Sam’s story here tells us that what such children need from us is not sympathy but a helping hand to hold on to and pull themselves up to lead ‘normal’ lives in this society.
