A simple activity can trigger curiosity among students

I am a science teacher of the middle school at Swami Vivekananda Rural Education Society School. I teach chemistry and biology. I enjoy my classes when my children enjoy learning. This is why I try to keep my lessons as innovative and application based as possible.

This month, while teaching about “Tissues” to my 9th  class students, I was looking for a way that will help them understand the meristematic tissue development. I looked for many activities online but I couldn’t get the one suitable for my class. Therefore, I turned to my book again and I found an interesting experiment. Most of us skip the added activities provided in the book but I feel doing those activities in the class adds a lot of value. It was a small step but then it brought beautiful results.

The next day we were all ready with the required materials. My children were very excited. We were going to grow an onion plant in a beaker. So, we went to the lab, picked our beaker and put the onion with some water. Going further, the children were to take notes on the daily development of the plant. After patiently waiting for 2-3 days, my children were really surprised to see the tiny roots coming out of the onion. The journey from root to shoot with beautiful leaves showed the development of meristematic tissues to simple permanent tissue.

My children saw it as a miracle. It was beautiful to watch their amazement. I really loved the part where children were noting down their observation. They were filled with curiosity about the next stage. I am looking forward to doing more such activities in my class going further.

I feel that it is very important to teach concepts to children practically. This builds their understanding better and also as teachers, gives us a lot of knowledge about our children. It is not necessary to look for big experiments, a simple activity like this is enough to spark their interest. I think all the teachers should try to make their lessons interesting with more activities relating to daily life.
